Cognitive Deficits in Alcoholic Women
نویسنده
چکیده
R indicates that longterm alcohol abuse1 can impair virtu ally all of the brain’s information processing (cogni tive) functions. Much of this research has been limited to the study of alcoholic men, perhaps, in part, because for many years, the primary locations for such research were Veterans’ Administration hospitals. This situation has changed in recent years. With increasing treatment availability and changing social mores regarding alco holism, more women are obtaining treat ment, thereby becoming available for study. This article focuses on the neuropsy chologic and neurophysiologic conse quences of longterm alcohol abuse in women. Broadly defined, neuropsycho logic functions include learning, memory, abstract thinking, problemsolving, perceptualmotor skills (such as eyehand coordination), and the ability to analyze spatial relationships (Hunt and Nixon 1993). Neurophysiologic functions are related to the structure and electrical activity of the brain.

A profile of neuropsychological deficits in alcoholic women.
Neuropsychological deficits, most notable in executive, visuospatial, and functions of gait and balance, are detectable in alcoholic men even after a month of sobriety. Less well established are the severity and profile of persisting deficits in alcoholic women. The authors used an extensive test battery to examine cognitive and motor functions in 43 alcoholic women who were sober, on average, ...
متن کاملCognitive performance in long-term abstinent alcoholic individuals.
BACKGROUND There are few investigations of the potential recovery of neurocognitive function in chronic alcoholic samples after very-long-term abstinence. The current study examined cognitive abilities in middle-aged (mean age 46.8 years), long-term abstinent alcoholic individuals (LTAA). Twenty-five LTAA men and 23 LTAA women abstinent for an average of 6.7 years were compared with an equal nu...
متن کاملCognitive deficits and their relationship to other neurological complications in chronic alcoholic patients.
In randomly selected chronic alcoholics hospitalised for the first time for detoxification a high prevalence (68%) of cognitive deficits was found. Peripheral neuronal damage was seen in 74%, autonomic neuronal damage in 24%. Cognitive deficits were not correlated with age, daily ethanol intake, duration of alcohol abuse or severity of liver damage. There was no correlation of peripheral, auton...
متن کاملNeuropsychological impairment in female alcoholics: replication and extension.
More than 30 years of neuropsychological testing of male alcoholics has demonstrated a pattern of alcoholism-related deficits characterized by intact verbal abilities but impaired performance on tests of abstracting, problem solving, and visualspatial functioning (Tarter, 1975). Until recently, there has been no investigation of neuropsychological functioning in women alcoholics, although the e...
متن کاملEffect of episodic and working memory impairments on semantic and cognitive procedural learning at alcohol treatment entry.
BACKGROUND Chronic alcoholism is known to impair the functioning of episodic and working memory, which may consequently reduce the ability to learn complex novel information. Nevertheless, semantic and cognitive procedural learning have not been properly explored at alcohol treatment entry, despite its potential clinical relevance. The goal of the present study was therefore to determine whethe...
